What is a Geosynthetic Cemetitious Composite Mat (GCCM)?
Concrete Cloth material is part of a revolutionary new class of construction materials called Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats (GCCMs). It is a flexible, concrete impregnated fabric that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, water proof and fire resistant concrete layer.
What is Concrete Cloth GCCM and how is it manufactured?
Essentially, it’s concrete on a roll. Concrete Cloth material is manufactured by Milliken Infrastructure Solutions, LLC (MIS) in its LaGrange, GA, production plant using specialized machinery designed by MIS & Concrete Canvas Ltd., to impregnate a custom cement blend with various admixtures into a 3D synthetic fiber matrix, with a plastic coating on one surface.
What applications is Concrete Cloth material currently used for?
It is typically used to replace conventional concretes, rip rap, shot-cretes and some geotechnical fabrics for a wide range of erosion control and protection applications. Typical examples include ditch lining, slope stabilization, secondary berm protection, culvert invert protection, and geosynthetic liner protection.
Does Concrete Cloth material provide fire protection?
Concrete Cloth material has achieved Euroclass classification B-s1, d0 which is the highest achievable level for combustible materials. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has certified that Concrete Cloth material passes ASTP-5011 standards for both vertical and horizontal applications. Additional testing based on specific applications can be conducted upon request.
How should it be stored prior to use?
Concrete Cloth material should be stored in dry conditions, away from direct sunlight and within the manufacturers sealed packaging.
What is the shelf life when properly stored?
When stored in the manufacturer's packaging, Concrete Cloth material can be kept for up to 12 months after shipment without significant degradation in performance.
What is the shelf life after opening?
Concrete Cloth material will start to lose performance once opened and should be used within a few days to prevent any significant degradation. It is best practice to reseal any packaging after opening to extend this period as much as possible.
Which thickness of Concrete Cloth material should I specify?
It depends on the application. Contact us for assistance for your specific application.
What widths, sizes and weights/thicknesses are available?
Please refer to the current data sheet.
Are different colors of Concrete Cloth available?
Concrete Cloth material is supplied in its natural color (mottled grey) as standard. The fiber surface of the material can easily be colored by painting with a good quality exterior masonry paint.
Installed Product Properties
Does the product require any post-installation maintenance?
Providing it is installed correctly, Concrete Cloth material requires no regular post-installation maintenance.
How should Concrete Cloth material be disposed of or demolished?
Concrete Cloth material can be demolished using standard construction demolition equipment and disposed of in the same manner as conventional concrete installations.
Which contractors have previously installed Concrete Cloth GCCM in construction projects?
Please visit our website for a list of case studies.
Installation & Use
What is the maximum inclination of ditch profile that Concrete Cloth material can be installed onto?
The material can be installed onto vertical surfaces.
Should Concrete Cloth material be laid with the fiber or plastic surface facing upwards?
For the majority of applications, it should be installed with the fiber surface exposed. The fiber reinforced concrete layer will protect the plastic backing from weathering and UV damage. If the material is being laid with the plastic exposed it should be hydrated prior to laying.
Can I cut the material?
Prior to hydrating, unset Concrete Cloth material can be cut using basic hand tools. It is recommended to use snap off disposable blades or handheld self-sharpening powered disc cutters. After the material has set, it can be cut using angle grinders, jigsaws with ceramic blades or good quality tile cutters.
Where can I buy ancillary installation products?
Building vendors can supply a full range of ancillary products for installation including ground pegs, water weights, jointing grout, render and sealant.
What methods are there of joining layers of Concrete Cloth material together?
The most common methods are overlap joint, adhesive sealant joint and concrete grout joint. There are a number of other mechanical and non-mechanical methods such as pegging, hog-ringing, steel wiring, thermal welding, and general fixings such as stapling, nailing or screwing. Please consult the most recent version of the Concrete Cloth installation guide for additional details.
At what intervals should Concrete Cloth material be fastened down?
This is dependent on the application and the quality and inclination of the substrate, but as a guide we recommend fastening at 6ft (2m) intervals and at joints.
Installation in Extreme Weather
Is it possible to lay Concrete Cloth material in wet conditions?
Yes. Once wet, the material has a working time of approximately 1 to 2 hours.
Is it possible to lay Concrete Cloth material in very cold conditions?
Yes. Warm water should be used for hydration and plastic sheeting should be applied over hydrated material during setting. Standard cold weather concreting procedures should be followed.
Are there any special precautions to take when laying the material in very hot conditions?
Yes. It is advised to install Concrete Cloth material at dusk to avoid evaporation of the hydration water in warm environments. In very hot conditions, it is advised to re-wet the material at two-hour intervals until fully saturated.
What type of water should be used for hydration?
The material can be hydrated using saline or non-saline water. The water does not need to be potable.
How much water should be used for hydration?
The minimum ratio of water to Concrete Cloth material is 1:2 by weight. It cannot be over hydrated so an excess of water is always recommended.
Where does the water come from for hydration? Do you need to bring in a water truck?
Water may be pumped from available water source in the area of the installation or trucked in via a water truck. Most contractors choose to bring in water via a water truck or use a local water source.
Is it possible to over-hydrate Concrete Cloth material?
What happens if the material is under hydrated?
The material will not reach its full strength and the setting time may be retarded.
Will Concrete Cloth material set underwater?
Yes. It will hydrate fully from immersion.
Health and Safety
What Health and Safety precautions should I take?
General PPE precautions should be taken; face masks, protective clothing and gloves should be worn when handling Concrete Cloth material. The material does not contain measurable amounts of soluble Chromium (VI) and is not classified as an irritant. Consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for more information.
How does Concrete Cloth material compare environmentally with conventional poured concrete?
Concrete Cloth provides material savings of up to 95% and reduces the need for cement mixing equipment, which can reduce the environmental impact of construction works. For detailed data on environmental data please consult your Milliken Infrastructure Solutions, LLC representative.
How does Concrete Cloth material washout affect the running water during installation?
The material has a low wash out rate compared to other cements and a limited alkaline reserve. Unlike most concretes, it is not classified as an irritant and is less damaging to the environment.
How will Concrete Cloth material look with age?
In some climates untreated Concrete Cloth material will naturally ‘green’ over time as the textured top surface allows moss growth, while the fiber-reinforced concrete layer will prevent root-growing vegetation, which in ditching applications could otherwise restrict water flow and increase maintenance costs.
Are samples available?
Yes. Contact us for information and sample requests.
What is the price?
Contact us for a quote specific to your requirements, volume and delivery location.
Can I order different lengths and widths of material other than the standard bulk or batched lengths?
