Concrete Cloth™ GCCM Installation Guide Meets International Standards

Posted by: Natalie Swift

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — ASTM International has announced the acceptance and publication of a new Standard Guide for Site Preparation, Layout, Installation and Hydration of Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats. The new guide ASTM D8173-18 covers GCCM materials including Concrete Cloth GCCM, a product manufactured by Milliken Infrastructure Solutions, LLC (MIS) and licensed by Concrete Canvas.

The Concrete Cloth GCCM installation processes and procedures now have third-party acknowledgement by ASTM International, one of the largest voluntary standards-developing organizations in the world, to support its use and add validity to the procedures detailed in the guide.

“The new ASTM standard for GCCMs will be invaluable to engineers in assisting the development of project specifications as related to how to use GCCMs and how they should be properly installed and placed into service,” said Joe Royer, Development Manager for MIS. “Having a standard guide developed by ASTM Committee D35 on geosynthetics is an important step in ensuring proper uniform instructions for how GCCMs should be deployed in the field based on peer reviewed concessions, making it simpler and easier for engineers to provide details that allow for the use of GCCMs.”

The development of standards for GCCMs is recognition of the importance for this emerging infrastructure repair solution. This standard is the fourth to be adopted since 2016 that addresses GCCMs.

Concrete Cloth GCCM is a flexible, concrete impregnated fabric that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, waterproof and fire-resistant concrete layer that is increasingly used in soil erosion protection and other construction projects. Concrete Cloth GCCM is a cost-effective alternative to rip-rap, shotcrete, poured concrete, and other erosion control methods frequently used in ditches, slopes, berms and more.
