Geopolymers Part 1 | Bringing 19th Century Infrastructure to the 21st Century

In the late 1800s, a sanitary sewer system was hand-built near a major university in Cincinnati, Ohio. Built with a hodge-podge of circular brick and stacked, arched stone and granite that varied in diameter throughout, it traversed several roads and burrowed under buildings.

After 130 years, the sewer pipe was in dire need of repair in order to stop active infiltration of groundwater. In 2011, Milliken Infrastructure Solutions (MIS) partnered with contractor Inland Pipe Rehab to determine viable solutions for repair. With so many issues at hand, the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) was looking for a comprehensive solution that would be cost-effective and long-lasting.

A number of alternative trenchless methods were evaluated, including Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) and slip-lining. CIPP was not a viable solution due to the variation of the pipe’s different shapes and sizes, the steep slope and the rough protruding stone. Slip-lining of the pipe was a poor option for the same reasons, and would have required digging several large access pits, resulting in significantly reduced flow capacity.

Milliken Infrastructure’s GeoSpray geopolymer, a high-performance fiber reinforced geopolymer mortar specifically formulated and engineered for rehabilitating pipes, culverts and containment areas, was uniquely suited to address issues including:

  • Severe degradation of the pipe
  • Uneven shapes within the pipe
  • Non-circular to circular changes in radius
  • Changes in grade
  • Limited access to the pipe for repair
  • Minimizing surface disruption
