Atlas™ HT System: 30" Liquid Pipeline

Project Overview
Two dents on a buried horizontal 30” liquid pipeline in Valley City, ND, required reinforcement using the Atlas™ carbon-fiber High Temperature (HT) wrap system. The first dent was 5.8” long x 5.3” wide x 0.1” deep, and the second dent was 7.5” long x 8.4” wide x 0.256” deep at the 12:30 position. The repair was a Class 1 location with a nominal wall thickness of 0.386” and a X70 grade pipe. The pipe’s temperature was 94° F and the ambient temperature of the location was 77° F. 

Repair Solution
For the pipe's repair, the team designed a temporary repair utilizing a custom design based on the ASME PCC-2 standard as a guideline. Ultimately, 13 layers of the Atlas HT system was to be installed over a two linear foot repair zone.

The complete repair took just over two hours with two Milliken Infrastructure Solutions Pipe Wrap® installers and contractor personnel working on the project. The pipe was media-blast cleaned and then wiped down with acetone to remove any oil residue. EP-HT filler material was applied to the dent and spiral weld and PPR-HT epoxy coating was applied to the entire repair zone. ILI smart pig markers were installed at both ends of each repair, and the Atlas HT system was used to wrap for two linear feet with 13 layers using the offset method. After the composite was in place, the team applied peel-ply and constrictor wrap and post-cured the section with heating blankets for about six hours. Once the section was cured, the peel ply and constrictor wrap were removed and Shore D hardness, visual test and tap tests were performed. The contractor applied a topcoat the following day, which completed the repair.
